Summary: Youths playing competitive baseball, as pitchers, are seeing more issues with their arms over time. Two local players are experiencing these issues right now. They also received advice from pro baseball players.
Problem: More and more youths are creating injuries by "over throwing" with their arm, which causing pain and leads to surgery at a young age.

Title: Killer Nile crocodiles in Florida? Experts say "it's possible".

Summary: Florida researchers have confirmed that three Nile crocodiles have been caught on the South East side of Florida, close to Miami. They were genetically tested and it was found that all three were related. It is speculated that someone brought the species into this country illegally, and possible released them with the intent of them breeding. The crocodiles were caught at separate time. The largest of which was euthanized. Florida wildlife professionals worry that the Nile Crocodile would be the next invasive species, coming in behind the python which has had a negative effect on the Everglades wildlife.
Problem: These Nile Crocodiles are a huge threat to the Florida ecosystem.
Who: The State of Florida, its resident, wildlife and cattle farmers.

Title: What's that green stuff tainting the Caloosahatchee?

Summary: The Caloosahatchee river is experiencing some kind of green algae floating along the surface. It is believed to be cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. The algae can cause health issues ranging from itchy eyes, to liver failure and death. Water samples were taken and they are testing it to confirm.
Problem: The presence of blue-green algae causes health problems, which can be very severe.
Who: Anyone that plans to any water activity in this area, and people who have allergies to it.

Title: Crime Stoppers seeking murder suspect in Harlem Heights killing

Summary: Authorities are trying to locate a suspected murder, who has evaded police for nine days. The crime was committed in Harlem Heights, Fort Myers area, and he was last seen in Orlando, FL in a stolen vehicle. He apparently shot a father of six earlier this month. He remains at large.
Problem: A murder suspect is on the run and continues to evade police.
Who: US Marshals task force, Crime Stoppers, and people in general who might be in harms way.

Title: Wells Fargo Bank takes over Gulf Coast Town Center

Summary: The owner/investor of Gulf Coast Town Center, in Fort Myers, FL defaulted on their loan. The property went to auction, where it was bid up and Wells Fargo ended up walking away with it. The shopping area saw some fairly weak bid initially before getting bid up.
Problem: A popular shopping area was foreclosed on and sold to a bank.

ReplyDeleteAs someone who coaches high school baseball--more specifically, pitchers, I can very easily relate to the opportunity that was first stated in your blog. We are starting to see more and more arm injuries trickle down to the youth level. One of the reasons is because of overuse and not properly feeding and taking care of the arm. Luckily, we haven't had many arm issues where I am because we really try to take care of our bodies and arm throughout the season and off-season.

ReplyDeletei agree, with the article about the youth getting injured. I myself, got injured when i was younger from playing basketball and soccer, and tore my acl. young bodies just sometimes cant handle the street form the workouts and practices. nut a lot of it goes into hydration stretching and proper form to play the sport. all your articles were very interesting it was cool to read about the crocodiles and housing as well.
ReplyDeleteThe article that really caught my attention was the killer Nile crocodiles. This is a scary idea to think that these crocs could start breeding and become another fear that we have to worry about. The other article that was interesting was about the kids injuring themselves in baseball by "overthrowing". There needs to be more education and training required by coaches to become more aware of these types of injuries that are affecting youth so they can step in and mitigate the risk of serious injury and preserve the bodies of these kids.
ReplyDeleteHi Lindsey, the article that caught my eye the most was the first one. I hear a lot of things from the news and parents that sports are a healthy part of children's lives but can prove to be very dangerous. I often see something about competitive cheerleaders or football concussions. I guess a solution could be for coaches and parents to tell young children to not wildly move and to teach proper techniques.
